ORAC values and antioxidant capacity

on September 9th, 2007

I’ve run across several sites in my goji research that quote tests done by a company called Brunswick Laboratories.

They always seem to point to Brunswick’s ORAC values as proof that the goji berry they are trying to sell you has great value as an antioxidant when ingested by humans.

However, Brunswick’s official website says this about ORAC values derived in their testing:

“The ORAC assays are performed in vitro, in the test tube, and therefore do not determine the bioavailability within the body. The high ORAC value indicates that the tested sample possesses a high potency of antioxidant activity chemically. “.

What that means is that they don’t actually study what happens in your body when you drink the berry juice, they simply measuer what happens in a test tube; and what happens in a test tube could be completely different from what happens when you ingest it.

List of Lycium Barbarum Wolfberries Research Articles

on September 8th, 2007

One of the problems with locating quality articles on the subject of lycium barbarum (goji, wolfberries) is that most of the articles are posted on websites that are trying to sell your their “cure all” goji juices and pills.

Some of these “self hype” sites I’ve visited quote these great sounding clinical studies that espouse the virtues of l. barbarum but when I try to track down the source of the studies… suprise… I can’t find them anywhere.

I’m not saying all research is bad, I’m just saying you have to be careful about the source of the information.

Here’s a comprehensive list of scientific research articles on goji berry (a.k.a. lycium Bararum and Wolfberries).

I haven’t verified the articles themselves, but what I do like about the list is that it doesn’t appear to me that these people are trying to sell me anything… they just seem to be compiling references to articles on the topic of l. Barbarum:
